- People elect representatives of areas known as constituencies.
- Constituencies are further divided into assembly constituencies.
- Every constituency has to have a roughly equal number of people living in it.
- Every constituency is describes as a 'seat' in the parliament.
- India has 543/544 constituencies.
- 84 constituencies are reserved for SCs, and 47 are reserved for STs so that every section of society has enough participation in the parliament.
- Every election, the list of voters is prepared, this list is known as the 'Voter's List'.
- Every candidate has to give a complete account of : Serious criminal cases pending against them, details of assets and liabilities and educational qualifications.
- Congress used the slogan 'Garibi Hatao' in the 1971 elections.
- Bhartiya Janata Party used the slogan 'Save Democracy' in the 1977 elections.
- The Left front used the slogan 'Land to the Tiller' in the West Bengal Assembly elections in 1977.
- 'Protect the Self-Respect of the Telugus' was the slogan used by N.T.Rama Rao of the Telugu Desam party in the AP assembly elections in 1983.

- All government officials work under the EC.
- The EC transfers the government officers.
- The CEC is elected by the President on the recommendation of the Prime Minister.
